So many people want to wish everyone a “happy” Memorial Day, and that just rubs me the wrong way. I doubt this will change some minds, but this is what Memorial Day is all about:
Memorial Day is a day on which those who died in active military service are remembered. At one time it was observed on May 30, but back in the 70’s the politicians decided it should be observed on the last Monday in May so that we could all have another three day weekend to begin our summer season. You might be happy that you have an extra day off work and get to bbq with family and friends, but you should be honoring, not celebrating, those who have given the ultimate sacrifice so that the rest of us can live free in the greatest country in the world. There’s nothing happy about a dead soldier.
